The Role of the Church Pianist

Thursday, July 6th, 2023

Several years ago, I shared a post about The Role of the Church Pianist.

I thought I would add a few extra thoughts on our role as church pianists.

I need to remember I am a servant of the Lord no matter what ministry I do.

Paid or unpaid…we are servants of the Lord.

Suggested tips for coaching vocalists:

  1.  Build a trusting relationship with someone before dishing out advice.  Careful to admonish in a constructive manner. For example,  “You have a wonderful voice but this particular song (though a great song) is outside your vocal range.  Would you mind trying another song that better suits your voice? You will be so much more effective when you’re not having to struggle to reach real high or low notes.”   * Sometimes high notes can be altered to make a song within means.
  2.   One thing I like to do when rehearsing with a vocalist is to call out question phrases ahead of each phrase being sung…forcing the singer to focus on the message of the song…thus making it more meaningful to them.  * I do this more with ensembles.

What is the Role of the Church Pianist?

Wednesday, October 9th, 2019

I’ve been thinking lately on  the different aspects of the church pianist’s role in the church.

In my 30 plus years as church pianist, I’ve never been paid to serve in the area of music ministry.

I’m not apposed to those who are paid to serve but our mindset should be “to serve” regardless if we’re paid or not paid.

As a Christian, we know that we are to strive to be Christ-like and to love the church as Christ loved the church.

Therefore, I always want to try and honor God in all I do…especially within the church consisting of my  fellow believers.

Here’s a list of ideas that run through my mind when serving at our church. (I need to take heed to this list!)

  1. Love my fellow believers as God would. It’s amazing how much falls into place when we just love our brethren no matter what.
  2. Patiently mentor those who need lots of practice
  3.  Think on words of songs while playing to clearly portray the message of the song (not just a bunch of useless dots on the page)  😉
  4. Adequate preparation to be more effective
  5. Compliment someone after they’ve played or sung a special to encourage them. (Slip them a text or note)
  6. Remember to follow the song leader   (exception: use your own judgement if you have a leader lacking rhythmic abilities 😉
  7. Give encouraging words to those you rehearse with (examples: Just sing from your heart!   I’ll pray for you as you sing, or thanks for being willing to sing, you’re such a blessing!)
  8.  Be as organized as possible! (Keep things tidy around the piano areas, such as put away music)  I have a basket on the floor by the piano at church… that holds music I need on a regular basis.
  9.  Give uprising pianists an opportunity to play for choir or prelude, etc. to build their experience level. (A great way to maintain a fill-in pianist for when you’re sick or out of town)  *Tip: try using them at least once a month to keep them in shape.  They do better if they play on a consistent schedule.
  10. The piano bench doesn’t have my name engraved on it!   SHARE!!!

I attend a small country church in the foothills of North Carolina so some of the above tips/ideas may not apply to your situation.  We have what I call a very “unique” church because they are SO loving and supportive.

When someone sings a special…our congregation is  rooting for the singer or instrumentalist, supplying periodic “amens” and nodding of heads as they listen.  You’ve probably picked up on that from the videos I share.

We also include children in our special music ministry.  It thrills my heart to hear young ones sing.  More importantly, it thrills the heart of our Savior.

Feel free to share your thoughts on the role of a churh pianist.

What is the Role of the Church Pianist?

Part One of this article is more of an introduction.

Part two will contain more specific information regarding the role of the church pianist.

Good question!  The role of the church pianist
varies from church to church.

Before I share some thoughts with you….I’ll
explain our church…so you can understand where
I’m coming from.

Our church is a small country church nestled in
the foothills of North Carolina.

The people are very friendly and family-oriented.

Most of the members have lived in the area
their entire life.

What I’m trying to say is….the needs of the church
determines the criteria for the church pianist.

In some churches, the church pianist may be the
only music person available. In this case, the
pianist may have to lead the congregation and choir
in song while playing the piano. What a challenge!
I know at least one of my readers has that situation.
I admire her for her efforts.

At other churches, the pianist may serve the role as
pianist only. (That’s my role).

Whether you’re the main music person or just filling
the role as church pianist…the following tips will
hopefully encourage and direct you as you serve in
the music ministry.

These are things that have personally helped me in my
way of thinking towards serving in the music ministry.

1. I’m a servant..serving the Lord.

2. Not to think of myself above others; no comparsion.
   Every church member is of equal importance to God.

3. Love my church family

   The following are natural outcomes of point #3….

4. Support and encourage those in the music ministry.
     Example: “Your song was a blessing.” or…
     “Thanks for being willing to sing.”

5. Pray for those in the music ministry

6. Always communicate in love

7. Use constructive guidance as needed
     (This can occur only after building a trusting relationship.)
     This applies if the person or persons you’re accompanying
     are seeking helpful pointers.

Please understand…these are just a few ideas that have helped to create

a proper mindset in me as church pianist.

Each church is different as far as their needs. Just ask God for
wisdom as you seek to serve Him where He has placed you.

      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m looking forward to part two of:  What is the Role of the Church Pianist?
Some of the  following issues will be covered:
*The relationship between  the song leader and church pianist.  (Who’s in charge?)
*Job description of the church pianist (What’s expected of me?)
*Developing  the Special Music Program (How the church pianist can help grow the special music program)
I can’t wait to share these ideas with you in full detail.
After reading this article, you may come up with your own ideas of ways to become more effective as
church pianist.  Above all else, may God receive the glory of our efforts as we seek to serve Him.
