It is Well! Congregational Leading by My Dad

“It is Well”,  a favorite among many of us.   I just had to share this uplifting video of my Dad leading “It is Well” for a group of Christian educator’s at a convention several years ago in Myrtle Beach, SC. Although you can’t see the crowd….you can tell they were singing from their hearts.

It was my honor to accompany Dad for the congregational singing and for his vocal solos.  Dad really “feels” the music which you will notice in the video below.

My parents have always encouraged me to serve the Lord through music. For that, I am truly grateful.

I noticed that you modulated between verses. Did you move up a half step or whole step? Also, I read before that you play somewhat by ear/feel, did you transpose on the fly or did you have music for the modulation? I am very curious about these things because I am a very visual person and am unable to transpose more than a half step without music. If I write out the chord progression before, I might be able to do it, but it would be shaky!!! lol I really admire people who can transpose easily. You accompany beautifully, by the way. Love your website!

I read music but also play by ear. My modulations are definitely “play by ear” when modulating. It depends..sometimes on the fly but sometimes planned out 😉
I would listen to my teacher who played in church (YEARS AGO) and then try to emulate what I heard.

I generally transpose up a half or whole step for specials, congregationals
But…also up a fourth or fifth when playing for prelude or offertory.
