Fill-in Ideas: It is Well (chorus)

Just this afternoon I had one of my intermediate students ask me, “What could I play during the echo section in the chorus of “It is Well?”

She enjoyed learning the left hand patterns I entered as a suggested route.  I told her if she would learn to recognize her chords in the hymnal…it would open up a whole realm of  improvising choices!

  1. Joy says:

What is the chord right above the word right above “my” (second to last measure) and how do you figure out what a chord like that is just by looking at it?

    • Jenifer Cook says:

It’s an inverted D flat suspended 4 chord. The root position for this D flat sus 4 chord is… D flat, G flat and A flat
A suspended chord works well towards end of a phrase on a long note (2 counts and beyond) creates a nice filler!
I need to do a video on this! 😉
As far as the look of a suspended chord…well…if you’re looking at a three note chord and one of the notes is right against one of the two notes…then it’s either a 7th chord or a suspended chord. Go by the sound of the chord to determine whether it’s a 7th or suspended. Both chord types lead into a root chord within a song but both the 7th and the suspended have their own unique sound. Hope this was a help.
