The Church Pianist: Upcoming Article (Free Piano Arrangement)
I’ll be posting a free piano arrangement of “Like a River Glorious” sometime this week. This free arrangement will be written in a prelude/congregational style for the church pianist.
“Like a River Glorious” is a beautiful hymn….speaking of God’s wonderful, everlasting peace that He gives to those who have trusted in Him.

Hello,
I am a piano teacher to Elementary age kids. I have been teaching them out of methods such as Alfred, Keys for the Kingdom, Faber and Faber, etc… I am trying to help them to learn to read music, but I would like to help them learn to play by chords.
Is there a curriculum you would recommend for learning chords and scales, or a procedure in how to introduce chords to kids.
I would appreciate your help. I enjoy your articles. Thank you for the help.

Alfred seems to be the best piano method for introducing chords at the beginner level.
I personally have not found a sufficient book for introducing chords to kids. Such a book may exist but I haven’t found it yet 🙂
John Thompson has a nice supplement book for introducing chords. Before using this book, they highly recommend that the student have a thorough knowledge of intervals so they will understand the chord structure.
Book title: John Thompson’s Chord-Speller (A Music Writing Book)
This book covers Major, minor, augumented and diminished triads, authentic and plagal cadences, dominant and diminished seventh chords. This is an older book but can be found from various websites. I found the book for $4.95
I like this book for its clear and simple layout!
