The Church Pianist: Free Piano Arrangement (Part One)

How about a free piano arrangement for “Sunlight”?  (congregational style)

One of my adult piano students attends a church with several pianists.  The songleader has setup a rotating schedule to give more of the pianists an opporunity to play for the church service.  What a great idea…utulizing the people God has provided a church family 🙂

I’ve particularly enjoyed sharing improvising tips with this student. She’s so ready to learn and has shown great progress in being more mobile on the keyboard due to her being able to play at her church.  The next hymn we will work with is “Sunlight”.  The melody is very busy….but….relax!  The pianist doesn’t need to play every single word 🙂   Just play on the main beats (1,2,3,4) and let the congregation keep up with the words.

Overall right hand analysis:  I used chord inversions with a sprinkle of triplet groups here and there for some extra spice. Measure #6: Look at how I play empty octaves (octaves without any notes in the middle) during fast passages in the right hand.  I added middle notes to the 1st beat of the right hand to emphasize the  accented beat in 4/4 time.  (Beats one and three are normally accented in 4/4 time.)

Left hand mainly consists of octaves and chords.  Notice the alternating bass in the piano score…avoiding the overuse of E flat bass in the vocal score. (as in measures #1,2,and 5)

Busy times…but still here 🙂   I’d like to share a free patriotic  piano arrangement with my church pianist readers.  My Country Tis of Thee is a very old hymn. The author of the melody is unknown but the words were written by Samuel Francis Smith.

As promised, I’m offering a free hymn piano arrangement today for church pianists.  The title of the hymn is “Like a River Glorious”.

This free piano arrangement can be used for prelude, congregational singing or as an offertory.

As a church pianist, I would find this arrangement most suitable for congregational singing.

This free piano hymn arrangement of “I Feel Like Travelling On” is geared for the beginning church pianist at an early elementary level.

My piano student featured in this video, is a church pianist who plays by ear but is learning to read music. She’s doing quite well! I’m writing arrangements with her level in mind.

Maybe some of you church pianists can share this with your students or use this free piano hymn arrangement for yourself.

I haven’t forgotten  part three of Scales in Hymns 🙂   I will post it tomorrow.

JESUS LOVES ME Pictures, Images and Photos

A hymn which has truly stood the test of time…Jesus Loves Me.

This hymn was born from a story read by the co-author…William Bradbury.

The story goes…

A young boy was dying and a dear friend read the boy this beautiful poem for comfort…

“Jesus loves me!  this I know, for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong, they are weak but He is strong.

Jesus loves me! He who died Heaven’s gate to open wide; He will wash away my sin, let His little child come in.

Jesus loves me! He will stay close beside me all the way.; He’s prepared a home for me, and some day His face I’ll see.”

What comforting words!

William saw this poem as an excellent song for children. He wrote a melody for the poem and added the chorus as we all know…

“Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes Jesus loves me! Yes Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.”

This hymn has reached the hearts of  young and old alike.

The next article will provide a free piano arrangement of this well-loved hymn.

Excellent Website for Church Pianists!

Monday, January 18th, 2010

James Koerts and I attended the same church many years ago. I have always enjoyed his style of playing.

He has an excellent website that offers resources to church musicians. You’ll find several free sacred piano arrangements as well!  My favorite arrangement is  For the Beauty of the Earth.

His latest piano tip article entitled, Tips for Playing Piano Preludes, emphasizes how the songs used in the prelude should be familiar to the congregation…so important!
