Easter Prelude Hymns for the Church Pianist
Easter…. a time to celebrate our Lord’s return. At our church, we include songs about Christ’s crucifixion and return.
I’ve created a list of suggested hymns that I would use for an Easter prelude service. I’ve also placed the hymns into groups that seem to go together.
Usage tips for Easter Preludes: (to avoid getting disoriented when applying the transitions) 😉
- Print the hymns listed below for prelude of your choice.
- Cut and paste each transition to the appropriate hymn
Easter Prelude #1 and #2 (transition sheet)
Hymns for Prelude #1
*Jesus is Coming Again (under copyright so not able to furnish a copy…just find it in hymnal in key of B flat)
Hymns for Prelude #2 (COMING SOON!)

Easter Prelude #3 (transition sheet)
* I HAD to write “Man of Sorrows” in C because of the neat sounding transition from E flat to C 🙂
I would like to see the transitions to each song. It would be nice to see the written version of “Man of Sorrows.” What key will ” Man of Sorrows” be written in? Most hymnals have it in B flat.
These are great. Thank you. I wondered about doing somber death songs or just happy energetic ones. I need about 15 minutes worth and He Lives and Christ the Lord is Risen today seem like the only specific peppy Easter ones I could come up with. Crown Him is a good idea!
Thanks so much for the Easter songs transitions. It is very helpful. Maybe one day you can write a congregational arrangement for “At the Cross.” I like your transition for this song.
You’re welcome Julia 🙂 I actually have a congregational of “At the Cross” ready to place in a congregational collection. I could post it as a single if interested…but it will be in a future collection.
Another question for you… How do you do the intro for congregational singing for “He Lives?” We usually do the last two measures for most hymns but not really liking it. Is it acceptable to do the first two measures and end with a V7 and I chord?
I usually play the last few measures starting with the words”You ask me how…” and I play it upbeat without holds so it doesn’t create a guessing game when starting first verse 🙂
Hmmm..singing thru the first few measures of verse…doesn’t seem like a good place to close to a I chord in time without sounding a little premature/odd. I would stick to the last couple measures of chorus if I were you….just my opinion though.
