Most Awkward Hymns to Play

Just curious…what seems to be one of the most awkward hymns for you as a church pianist to play for congregational singing?

As soon as I collect a sizable list (at least 10)…I will number them and draw a number out of the hat and write a free congregational piano arrangement of that particular hymn. *Please: One hymn suggestion per person

Special note: Please only choose hymns that are in the public domain.

Here’s how a public domain hymn may appear

*Sometimes a public domain hymn will have no credits at the bottom like this:

Just avoid choosing a hymn with this symbol © at the bottom of the page such as the following:

Be Still My Soul is a hymn I love, but have a hard time finding fill ins for. Really looking forward to this. Thanks.

  2. Jo Michael says:

Like A River Glorious is a awkward one. “Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness”, great for offertory in a small church. “And Can It Be That I Should Gain” — some folks call it Amazing Love. love your arrangements!!!!

  3. Julia Swarner says:

I Know Whom I Have Believed. This is a great idea for a giveaway!

  4. Nelda Rust says:

Take my Life and Let it Be, the one the music is by Henry A. Cesar Malan. It says the last verse is copywrited but the rest isn’t.

  5. Ashley says:

Oh, that’s hard to choose! I’ll say “Jesus I am Resting, Resting”.

  6. Becky Yeiter says:

    Grace! Tis a Charming Sound
This song came up for this Sunday morning (2-28)in our church service.

  7. Lawrence says:

I choose ‘Christ Receiveth Sinful Men’. I have always have struggled with this one.

  8. Rick says:

Where He Leads Me I Will Follow

  9. Shirley says:

The Church’s One Foundation, eg. the second line where the parts are separated so widely, only an organist can play them by using the pedals. It sounds ‘thin’ on the piano, rather than the full sound it should have.
