If you’re a church pianist of a small church like me…then you probably create or tweak a written Christmas program that best suits the number of people available for a program.
In the next article…I will deal with tips for Christmas programs. Some of the tips will refer to today’s free Christmas arrangement…so have it handy for my next post.

The Church Pianist: Free Easy Christmas Program
Sunday, November 8th, 2009This is a very easy Christmas program I put together several years ago for our church.
We like to involve as many ages of people as possible. Here are the groups of people we used.
Narrators: young teenagers
Adult choir
Children’s choir for: “Away in a Manger”
The manger scene characters were young children in costume.
The actors did not have speaking parts…just showed action as indicated on the program order.
The Church Pianist: Easy Christmas Program!
Saturday, November 7th, 2009Is your church in need of an easy Christmas program? I just found one tonight while surfing the web.
Go to the following link to see and hear the music and to view the narration script. The easy two part choir arrangements are beautiful! The instrument part on “O Come O Come Emmanuel” sounds so pretty.
This would be an excellent program for any size church!
Title of the program: The Story of the Carols
The Church Pianist: The First Noel (free piano duet arrangement)
Thursday, October 8th, 2009I wanted to share this free piano arrangement of The First Noel.
Natalie Wickham of Music Matters Blog arranged this easy piano duet of The First Noel. Natalie gave me permission to post an audio of her arrangement but I will share the link to her blog for this nice piano duet.
This free arrangement would be nice for a beginning piano student to play with a teacher or more advanced piano student.
The arrangement is short but would work well in the smaller church. You could always play it two times for a longer offertory.

The Church Pianist: Free Christmas Piano Arrangement
Friday, December 19th, 2008Click here for free arrangement of O Little Town of Bethlehem
The mood of a song determines what
type of accompaniment the pianist will use.
“O Little Town of Bethlehem” is a soft
and peaceful Christmas carol…like a
lullaby.
If I were playing this as a piano solo,
I would use less fullness for a softer
texture. Since this was arranged for the
congregation, the pianist will need
fuller chords for supporting a large
This particular Christmas carol has
frequent accidental or (altered) chords,
which can create awkward moves for
the pianist.
I tried to create an accompaniment
containing smooth harmonic movement
for the pianist.
Editor notes for: “O Little Town of Bethlehem”
Measure 3 :
I added the 7th note
to the ii chord (g minor) for a warmer
tone on the 3rd beat.
Measure 5:
The right hand plays a
fill-in on beats 3 and 4 for a smooth
transition to the upper range.
Measure 7:
Notice how I’m working
my way back down to the middle
range of the keyboard with my
right hand.
Measure 8:
I’m back to middle range
of keyboard to create a darker tone for
the words. (“….dark street…”)
Measure 13:
Bell tones (4th interval on
beats 2 and 3 to convey a “lighter” tone).
Please feel free to use this free piano
arrangement for congregation or choir.
You may adapt it to a piano solo with
minor changes.
